MISSION STATEMENT

To promote responsible development, production, use market and application of genetically modified organisms and to ensure that all the activities involving the use of all genetically modified organisms / living modified organisms are carried out in such a way as to limit risks to the environment and to promote development of biotechnology for sustainable development.

OBJECTIVES

Goal: To support the implementation of the National Biosafety Framework for Kenya in line with the Cartagena Protocol by establishing a sustainable and effective biosafety management system, strengthening capacity building and national infrastructure as needed for LMOs import/export, handling, transport and release in the country.
  • To support the Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in Kenya in compliance with the Cartagena Protocol. The overall objective is to strengthen the needed capacity, which would enable the Country to implement the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety;
  • To support the establishment of the regulatory and administrative basis for the implementation of the management and monitoring system related to the safe environmental release, commercial production and transboundary movement of living modified organisms (LMOs) in Kenya, in compliance with the obligations of the Cartagena Protocol;
  • To strengthen capacity building on biosafety policy, management, administration and risk management (in order to provide guidance and design risk management options and strategies);
  • To strengthen national capacities for LMOs monitor inspection and enforce activities;
  • To strengthen the national information system to serve as well for the purposes of BCH;
  • To strengthen national capacity to enhance public awareness and promote information sharing on biosafety as well as public participation related issues.
