To create awareness on Modern Biotechnology and Biosafety, the following documents have been published.

What is Modern Biotechnology?
Biotechnology has been used for thousands of years in the form of traditional fermentation techniques in the production of products such as cheese, bread or beer; as well as in traditional animal and plant breeding techniques to create better animals and crops. Tissue culture and micro-propagation are other forms of biotechnology.

The difference with modern biotechnology is that researchers can now take a single gene from a plant or animal cell and insert it in another plant or animal cell to give a desired characteristic, such as a plant that is resistant to a specific pest or disease. These products of modern biotechnology are often referred to as living modified organisms (LMOs) or Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). LMO/GMO is therefore any living organism.....more
